Mobule Storage says Western Australia's renovation approvals have moved against the national trend, and that households starting a renovation this spring should plan where their furniture will live before the first wall comes down.
The ABS Building Approvals release for July 2026, published on 1 September 2026, reports that the value of residential alterations and additions approved in Western Australia reached $130.4 million in July 2026 in original terms, compared with $88.7 million in July 2025, an increase of 47%. The trend estimate for Western Australia rose for the tenth consecutive month to $123.2 million.
Nationally, the picture is flatter. The seasonally adjusted value of alterations and additions across Australia fell 3.9% to $1.29 billion in July 2026, and the national trend estimate eased 1.0% to $1.33 billion.

How much renovation work is Western Australia approving?
Over the 12 months to July 2026, Western Australian councils approved $1.32 billion of residential alterations and additions in original terms, up from $1.14 billion in the previous 12 months and $1.00 billion in the 12 months to July 2024. Alterations and additions accounted for roughly one in ten dollars of all residential buildings approved in the state in July 2026 ($130.4 million of $1.34 billion).
These are approval values in current prices and describe work councils have approved, not work completed. They do not capture renovations that do not require a building approval, so the total amount of renovation activity in Perth homes is larger than the approvals series shows.

How does Mobule Storage help a household renovate without moving out?
For renovations where the household stays in the home, Mobule Storage supplies a weatherproof 8 cubic metre on-site mobule that is delivered to the driveway and left in place for the length of the job, at $169 per month plus delivery. The company's FAQ page describes the on-site mobule as suited to home renovations, and the mobule can also serve as extra lockable space on a building site or at an event.
Where the renovation is larger, or where there is no driveway space, a standard mobile storage mobule in 6, 8 or 10 cubic metres is delivered, packed by the household, collected and stored at the Forrestdale facility until the work is finished. Mobules hold up to 1 tonne, and a heavy-duty furniture blanket and mattress covers are sold through the packing supplies page.
Suggested quote, approval required: "A 47% jump in the value of approved renovation work in a single year means a lot of Perth lounges, kitchens and bedrooms are about to become building sites," said Andrew Nairn, Facility Manager, Mobule Storage. "The households that cope best are the ones that decide in the first week where the furniture goes, so the trades have a clear floor and nothing gets moved twice."
What should renovating households keep out of storage?
Mobule Storage mobules cannot hold paint, paint thinners, varnish, fuel, gas bottles, aerosols, pool chemicals or other flammable and corrosive materials, which are the categories most often left over from a renovation. WorkSafe WA's asbestos in the home guidance notes that asbestos-containing materials were commonly used in homes until the mid-1980s, with some products used until the early 1990s, and should be read before demolition begins.
Perth households planning a renovation can request an instant quote for an on-site or mobile storage mobule.
